The New Nouns Gift Guide - Part 3
Even more cool things for the weirdos in your life.
Welcome to part 3 of the New Nouns Gift Guide. It’s almost Christmas. You should probably be done shopping by now.
Apparently a bunch of Amazon folks are strike. Probably rightfully so.
Either way, you can blame them for showing up empty handed this year.
NOTE: At the request of Mo McKnight of Revelry in Louisville, I have changed all book links below from Amazon to Carmichael’s Bookstore to help support local businesses this holiday season. Oh, and go spend money at Revelry too.
🎁 The Nouns of December 20, 2024
Below are recommendations for the people in your life, organized by something they might say.
More each week until Christmas because gmail won’t let me put them all in one email.
“is that walnut?”
“you need CYMK or RGB?”
“preworkout”

I wrote about this in an early issue of New Nouns when it first came out and have since gotten my hands on one. It’s awesome. From Jason Hibbs (Bourbon Moth Woodworking), the Bourbon Blade is the love child of a pocket knife and a chisel. A beautiful love child. |
Look. This link will take you to a website with very expensive woodworking tools. And I know, you could probably get the same thing for cheap at home depot. But this is a gift guide. And this is me, telling you, that if you know someone who makes things out of wood and you buy them a Woodpecker tool, they will love it. Period. I recommend the squares, but everything is great.

If you were unaware, Nick Offerman is actually a legit woodworker. His workshop, Offerman Woodshop make some awesome things that would also make great gifts. But if you want something made of trees, but not wood, check out his book about it. Fun fact: Nick Offerman and Jimmy Diresta (from the ice picks above) are old friends and built the canoe Ron Swanson paddles in the finale of Parks and Rec together long before either of them were famous. |

While I’m a big fan of the classic black Sharpie for writing my name in my underwear, these new creative markers let me do it with a little more flair. Oh, and they are a joy to write with on pretty much anything else too. |
Aaron Draplin is a legendary graphic designer who you’ve probably never heard of but your cool niece who’s going to SCAD this year definitely has. His shop is full of cool stuff, but this pizza poster is a particular fave.

I think every creative person should read this book. It is the closest thing to a spiritual text about creativity I have ever read and, of the 35 books I have read this year, remains my number 1 recommendation. In fact, stop reading this and go read The Creative Act instead. |

Get one of these for your annoying uncle who won’t stop talking about the ride he just finished on his Peloton. As that uncle, I can tell you they are legitimately handy for watching tik tok while “exercising”. |
I know this is weird, but I actually like to run in the dark. When I decide to listen to my family asking me to try to not get hit by a car, I wear one of these. It’s actually pretty sweet.

When covid hit, I hunkered down with my newborn daughter and ate my feelings. My friend Aaron decided to start running ultra marathons. Jerk. He recommended I read Born to Run and it is legitimately an incredible book whether you are interested in running ultras or not (I’m in the not category). Thanks Aaron.
