Death Metal for Cutie
Pete's notebook / a $40 spoon

The first time I wrote this the page refreshed for some reason and deleted the whole thing. I think the first version might have been better, but we’ll never know because I have the memory of a goldfish and you weren’t there. 🤷♂️

The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir (that’s the name of a metal band) recently dropped Farther Than Ever Before, a metal compilation cover of Death Cab for Cutie’s legendary Transatlanticism. Proceeds go to the Global Action for Trans Equality and the Palestine Children's Relief Fund.
I’m not a huge metal fan.
But I love the idea of weird covers for good causes.

Here is a note from the band on the project:
As artists, music comes as a source of joy, an outlet for stress, and a platform to speak on what is important in the world. When we are able to make a difference, it is something that can elate us and remind us of our importance as people living around other people, and use our platforms to contribute to this world around us. And while we do what we can, it is often easy to feel lost and wonder what we can do to help more, especially in times like these.
As situations in the world get consistently more dire for many different people, we are constantly looking for opportunities to help in whatever way we can. Sometimes, issues lie in various corners of the world (as we are currently seeing in Sudan, Palestine, Congo, Hawai'i, and many other places as they struggle against the heavy hand of imperialism). Other times, they live in our own backyard (the persecution of trans people, police violence against people of colour, rampant homelessness, lack of addiction education and resources, and many more). We have personally been asking ourselves questions about if there is a way to make more of a tangible difference doing what we love to do.
If you want to check out my favorite Death Cab cover of all time ⬇️

Photographer, YouTuber, and generally cool dude Peter McKinnon has pretty good taste.
Naturally his recent “I tracked my habits for 300 days” video is pretty much just a list of cool shit for journaling.
At the center of his whole thing is the Sendak Artist Roll. It’s cool. It’s expensive. Probably need it.
I’d also recommend checking out the Patagonia Worn Wear Repair Roll if you need a thing to stick your things in.
Pirate Pete also mentions his favorite pens, the uni-ball signo 0.38. I’ve been using some for the last week or so with quite a bit of joy. If you’re into a nice clean super thin line, they might bring you joy too.

Amateurs are obsessed with tools. What kind of pen do you journal with. Like this fucking matters at all. 🤷♂️🤦♂️

Not all spoons are created equal.
And somewhere at the top of that silverware hierarchy is the Gray Kunz spoon.
Named for designer Chef Gray Kunz, the Kunz spoon is the platonic ideal of a spoon.
Perfectly shaped for scooping, dripping, tasting, swirling, and doing that fancy thing that chefs do where they spread out sauce in a little swoop.
You can check out the original Gray Kunz spoon here.
Or, if ya feelin’ fancy, pick up the gorgeous JB Prince x Tilit collab black version.

Might be the only spoon you’re getting.
be good
